Steps involved in the process of choosing your hardwood flooring contractors:

1. Decide what it is that you need to do and write it down.

-new wood floor supplied and installed

-old floor sanded and finished

If, for example, you choose a lower price quote that offers a certain type of varnish, over the more expensive type, be sure to ask about the characteristics of both varnishes. The more expensive may last 4 times as long as the less expensive one. It means, that you will need to go through the hassle of moving your furniture, and leaving the house for a day or so a lot sooner, then if you chose more expensive finish in the first place. Just something to consider...

Be sure that you know who is coming in, to actually do the work. Remember, some store owners, have no practical experience, and yet they will be the ones coming to your home to provide an estimate, it's all fine, but you may also expect them to show up to do the job; this may not be the case. Ask first, so you know what to expect.

8. Execute a contract with your chosen contractor, specifying the work to be done, price and payment schedule, start date and estimated completion date.

Keep in mind that:

-when project involves installation of your own wood or refinishing of an existing floor, the contractor may ask you for a small booking deposit. This is to secure a date for your project. That deposit should not exceed 10% of the total cost of the project. This deposit is usually not refundable if you cancel the job or want to reschedule at the last minute.

-when wood order is required, you may be asked to provide an amount to cover the cost of wood entirely, prior to wood order placement. This is because many wood manufacturers do not accept returns of opened boxes, and there is always a substantial restocking charge, if returns are allowed. The contractor is placing an order on your behalf and for your job specifically. If you change your mind after order placement there is not much that can be done with the wood purchased for your project.

It does happen, unfortunately. Contractors need a little protection as well... especial in times when wood prices are substantial. No one wants to get stuck with ,000.00 worth of wood. If you are not convinced, you may choose to purchase the wood yourself directly from the supplier, however, the price will be higher, then this offered by your contractor. If such deposit is required, and if you agree to it, you should receive a receipt for the amount of deposit. No other deposits should be required, and contractor should not ask for any other payments until entire project is finished. You may feel uneasy with this type of arrangement, it is understandable, this is when you should consider a contractor that was specifically recommended to you. You will have an easier time trusting such person.

Please remember, that when you are working with recommended individual, or reputable company, well established in your community, your risk does virtually not exist. Why? Because the risk of not satisfying your needs and expectations of our clients (you) is not worth taking.

During our 12 years in business we had two unhappy clients. For different reasons, we were not able to satisfy their expectations ourselves, so their money was refunded, and another professional was recommended to complete the job. In the end the jobs were done the way the clients expected, we lost some money but our reputation was unspoiled, because of the way that we handled an uneasy situation. It is always in the best interest of the business to keep their clients happy, otherwise we would not be in business... It's as simple as that.

So take your time, go through the process of choosing your hardwood flooring contractors and make an educated decision. If you do, you will be happy with the progress of the project as well as the final results. Hasty decisions, on the other hand may cost you a lot of time, money and grief.

American Motors wanted to sell their car "Matador" in Puerto Rico. Matador is a very famous fighting arena and it rings well with the American general population. However, Puerto Ricans were very reluctant to buy the car because "Matador" means "killer" in Spanish.

An American Cooking Oil Brand did not do very well with their sales in South America because the brand name was translated into Spanish as "Jackass Oil".

The world famous Schweppes had its share of bloopers. They went ahead to market their "Schweppes Tonic Water" as "Schweppes Toilet Water" in Italy.

Toothpaste giant Colgate sold their new product called "Cue" in France. What they did not know at that time was that "Cue" is the name of an infamous French porn magazine.

The company Gerber, which manufacture baby food in the USA, did not do well with their products in the African countries. There was nothing wrong with their translated promotional text. They also used a baby photo on the packaging. Only after some marketing feedback, the company found out that African consumers want to know what content is inside the container, and they wanted to see the picture of it on the label. In this case, they expected to see the picture of baby food. This is mainly because the general African population is illiterate.

Therefore, it is always important to watch out for these advertisement bloopers as they can make or break your business.

I posted an interesting quote / question from the author of the E-Myth, Michael Gerber on Facebook and Twitter which read...

"Why is it that with all the information available today on how to be successful in small business, so few people really are?"

Anyway, I got some interesting responses including...

Even if you are doing everything right, you need co-operation from your clients (it's your client's fault)

Maybe people are spending too much productive time reading

As well as...

Ignorance? Hubris? Fear?

Reading, not doing.

Not taking action.

Lack of follow through and fleeting motivations.

As you can see, this sparked quite a bit of interest, so I thought I would take a moment to cover off my thoughts on this subject.

I think there are a few reasons.

1. Most people don't read enough: and yes, while there is a lot of information out there, if you don't read or listen to that information and actually take it in, it's going to do you absolutely no good.

The bottom line is we should all have audio in our car and be carrying a book around with us to read in our down-time to be in a state of constant learning.

That's what I try and do. But I rarely see it happening and there are people who think I am crazy because I am such an avid learner.

But the bottom line is - the more you learn, the more you earn. Or at least that's my experience. Of course, if you also...

2. Take Action: I know plenty of people who are "mavens" (they know a lot about business) but have empty pockets.

Why?

Because they don't implement what they know. There is no better teacher than real life experience and you don't really know something until you actually do it and experience the results for yourself.

I once thought I was a great marketer - until I actually opened a business and fell flat on my face (that was my hairdressing business). It was a bit of a reality check.

But I've done other things which have succeeded and paid off handsomely. You only really learn from making mistakes and doing something. You also only become successful in business by following this same path.

3. A closed mind: I was amazed when I first started selling this whole direct marketing stuff that some people were so closed off to it. I would show them facts and studies and some people were so skeptical and closed off they wouldn't even open their mind to it.

If one's mind is closed off to these ideas, it doesn't matter how much good stuff is out there, you're never going to be able to digest it.

4. Follow through: I used to get really excited about a project and then dump it... moving onto the next. Like a network marketer who jumps from one company to another on a month to month basis, I wouldn't stick to anything for any period of time.

Until I met my wife.

In truth, I owe a lot of my success to her because she helped me remain focused and develop follow through.

So the four legs to the success stool - according to Scott Bywater - are...

1. Become an avid reader
2. Take action
3. Open your mind
4. Focus and follow through

I would also add to this responsibility. You can't blame other people like your clients for your lack of success - the reality is if you don't like the clients you are attracting, you need different bait.
